This product is a fixed output dc/dc converter designed as a drop-in replacement for popular 3-terminal positive voltage regulator. It has the same pin arrangement as with the 78XX series, with an extra enable pin to allow your circuit to shut down the regulator to further lower the power consumption during the time it is not needed.

Why use a DC/DC Converter instead of linear regulators?

Linear regulators pretty much excel in doing their job, but it has one consequential problem - it does not handle situations well when the input-output difference in voltage is quite large. For example, a 5V regulator with 12Vinput running at 1A load will have to dissipate power (12-5) * 1 = 7W(!) during operation (5V*1A/12V*1A = 41.67% efficiency). Not only is this wasteful- your linear regulator will need a large heatsink to operate properly, and your circuit will run quite hot. This will be a bigger still issue if your circuit is to run on batteries! Your battery will run dry in no time at all.

This is the situation where the DC/DC converters will be at their best. e-Gizmo 5V DC/DC converter will run with a typical efficiency of 90%, meaning most of the power goes straight to the circuit you are powering up, with only 10% going to waste as heat. Hence, the system will run cool enough, it won’t require a heatsink, and will run longer on batteries.
